Jackson

I immediately tensed and scanned the area around us. I didn’t see any unfamiliar cars around, but that didn’t rule out that someone might have pulled their vehicles behind a building. They could be hiding somewhere nearby or have broken into the house.

“We need to get inside.” I unlocked the door and hustled Daniel inside. I handed him the car keys. “I’m going to check out the house. If I yell, jump in the car and go.”

“I’m not leaving you. Anyway, I’m not allowed to drive yet. I shouldn’t have even read this.” He waved the papers around and then locked the front door. I could tell by the set of his jaw that Daniel wasn’t going to back down.

“Fine.” I didn’t have time to argue. My instincts to protect him where almost overwhelming. “Just wait here. Please.”

Daniel looked like he was going to protest again, but I took his unhurt hand in mine.

“Please,” I said. “I don’t think that I could stand it if anything else hurt you.”

He hesitated and nodded. We went into the living room together. He stood in the center of the room while I looked behind the couch and curtains. There was an old standup piano in the corner, but it was flush against the wall. It would have been obvious if someone had moved it. Daniel looked pale.

“Why don’t you sit down?” I guided him to the couch and tucked a blanket over him.

“It’s like 80 degrees in here.” He complained but snuggled under the blanket anyway.

“Yes, but its 85 degrees outside. You might catch a chill with the extreme change in temperature.” I patted him on the shoulder and then moved into the kitchen.

“Bossy alpha,” he murmured.

The house was very small compared to modern houses, but it was built solid. It was a Craftsman that had been built in the 1920s as the groundskeeper’s cottage. When the Hart family had acquired the property, they turned it into the family home. Somewhere along the line, they had added onto the house, but it was harmonious with the bones of the house.

The kitchen was clean and tidy with a small garden of herbs on the windowsill. It smelled like fresh bread. After I finished looking around the house, I needed to come back and find something for Daniel to eat. Maybe I could make a can of soup or something. At least, there was a microwave so I wouldn’t be completely helpless.

Two doors led off the side of the kitchen. The pantry was behind the first one. It was empty of any unwanted humans but it was full of jars and cans of food. Good. I grabbed a can of Broccoli cheese soup and set it on the counter. I would get to that when I came back.

The other door led to a laundry area that was connected to the outside. I tried the back door, and it was dead bolted. I opened it and checked the back porch. Nothing out of the ordinary was there.
